Permission Slips

August 14, 2011

Dear Modern Literature Students and Parents:

As we near the first day of class, I wanted to let you know about an exciting opportunity you will have during first semester. One section of Modern Literature will pilot class set of Nooks. A Nook is a device that allows you to read books electronically, similar to a Kindle or Sony E-Reader. As a result, instead of checking out the various novels we will read during the semester, you will just check out a Nook, preloaded with everything you’ll need. The convenience and text tools the Nook offers will be of great assistance to you as we read and discuss each book. You may find that in a few short years, most books, including textbooks, will be distributed in this manner. For more information I have attached the rationale and goals for this pilot.

I am looking to you and your classmates to show that high school students are responsible enough to be trusted with such technology. The work we do during this pilot will determine whether or not similar electronic devices will be implemented in the future. Because we will only pilot the Nooks with one class, I am sending this letter to you now in order to know ahead of time who would like to participate and who would not. This will allow the guidance office to schedule classes accordingly.

It is important for you to know that if you participate in this pilot, you will be responsible for taking care of the Nook and returning it at the end of the semester. In the event your Nook is lost, stolen, or damaged, you will be responsible for paying the replacement cost of $139.00. This is consistent with our district’s policy for textbook use.

While I feel there are several benefits of using the Nook with literature study, if you feel using the Nook is not for you, please indicate this on the slip below, and return to the high school (C/O Lisa Carothers) by Tuesday, August 23.

If you are ready to use Nooks in your Modern Literature class, please indicate this on the slip below, read the corresponding terms of agreement, sign, and return to the high school (C/O Lisa Carothers) by Tuesday, August 23. Please note that spaces are limited and based on individual schedules.

If you have questions, please do not hesitate to contact me at

Sincerely,

Lisa Carothers
